Hotel Review:The Harbour Grand Hong Kong

Overview

It’s all about location at the Harbour Grand and its setting on Victoria Harbour offers stunning views of Hong Kong from its rooms and suites and the hotels restaurants and bars.

The Harbour Grand is a large hotel and offers 828 guest rooms and suites. Its location means it’s close to many of Hong Kong’s best shopping areas including Causeway Bay which is easily accessible from the nearby Fortress Hill MTR station.

There’s a lovely outdoor pool, a state of the art fitness centre and spa as well as several restaurants and bars. Definitely visit the rooftop bar for a drink, it’s worth it for the impressive views.

Check In

I arrived at the hotel in the late afternoon and found check in to be quick and efficient, within a few minutes I was heading up to my room. I did notice at other times that the lobby area got extremely busy with large groups of Chinese tourists who don’t seem to understand the concept of queuing – just one of my British quirks – which means it can take some time to get served. At these busy times there also seemed to be a lack of staff available to deal with the amount of people that needed to be seen.

Accommodation

My room on the 24th floor was a standard room and was very nice with a beautiful view out across the harbour. There was a comfortable king size bed with four big pillows (I can never have enough pillows!). The room was furnished in a contemporary style and had all the usual facilities you’d expect in a hotel of this standard.

There were tea and coffee making facilities, a good sized work area with plenty of space and views out to the harbour and a flat screen TV with a reasonable selection of channels.

The bathroom was modern and done in a wet room style with the shower being hooked on to the wall next to the bath. The bathroom sink faced into the bedroom and was separated by a floor to ceiling glass window with a mirror built in, not a problem for me as I was on my own although there was a privacy blind that could be closed at the touch of a button.

Overall I found the room to be very comfortable and suitable for all my needs whilst I was there.

Restaurants & Bars

There are several restaurants and bars at the Harbour Grand serving everything from western favourites to expertly prepared Cantonese and Japanese specialities.

I visited Le 188 degree Restaurant and Lounge on the 41st floor of the hotel. It wasn’t cheap but its floor to ceiling glass windows and outdoor terrace offer spectacular views of Hong Kong harbour and it’s worth going to even if it’s only a drink.

Hotel Facilities

The hotel offers a state of the art fitness centre and luxury spa as well as a 27 metre long outdoor swimming pool. There are also excellent conference and meeting facilities including a 6200 square feet pillarless ballroom which can accommodate up to 700 guests in a theatre style setting.

Staff

I found the staff at this hotel to be a little hit and miss with the service very much depending on who you spoke to. A lot of the staff seemed to favour the local visitors while showing indifference to other international guests.

In My Opinion

A large but generally good hotel in an excellent location with clean and comfortable rooms. The hotel offers good facilities but in my opinion lacks a little bit of personality, not enough to put me off coming back in the future but it’s worth considering when choosing a hotel in Hong Kong.
