Check In

Having visited this hotel several times I’ve found check in to be efficient and quick. The bright and busy lobby area can seem a little overwhelming when you first enter and there can sometimes be a lot of people waiting at the front desk but I find the queues move quickly and you’re normally dealt with within a few minutes. From my experience I’ve found the staff at the front desk to be a little hit and miss although most of the time I’ve had no reason to complain.

Accommodation

This hotel has quite a variety of rooms that differ in size and shape. I’ve stayed in a couple of types of their standard rooms and found them to be reasonably good particularly for hotels in New York. Both rooms I have stayed in had two double beds and one also had a lounge area, there was plenty of storage space, a large desk. an Ipod docking station and all of the usual things you’d expect to find in a hotel of this standard. The rooms have a stylish feel with fresh and modern decor.

The only real issue I had in one of my rooms was the bathroom. It was tiny, like a broom cupboard! There was no bath, fine, that’s not a problem, but the shower was so small I struggled to turn around and wash myself properly, I ended up leaving the shower curtain open so I could move but soaked the bathroom floor. There wasn’t really anywhere to put any toiletries either and so they ended up on the desk in my room which was a bit of a pain.

As you would expect in New York there’s a lot of outside noise, to counteract this the hotel does provide earplugs and trust me you will need them! Some parts of the hotel are quieter than others but try and avoid the rooms that are near the fire station as the noise can be horrific.

Restaurants & Bars

I can honestly say that I’ve never eaten in the hotel restaurant as I feel there are so many better options to choose from in a city like New York. Having looked at the menu it offers the usual hotel fare with a good selection of choices.

The bar area sits on the main street and attracts a mixed crowd of hotel guests, tourists and the after workers. It’s a modern bar with a funky vibe that serves an extensive list of cocktails and other drinks. It’s a great place if you’re looking to catch some of that classic New York atmosphere.

Hotel Facilities

The hotel boasts a brand new state of the art gym with cardio and weight training stations and it’s open 24 hours for guests.

There’s a small shop in the lobby for all those essentials you may need. If you’ve booked a room with a kitchen area you can also order groceries from FreshDirect to be delivered to your room.

The hotel also offers a complimentary Citi Bike pass (for eligible rates), a Go Mobile exploring app and pre-bookable summer picnics

Staff

I’ve personally found the staff at the hotel to be okay, as with a lot of big city hotels it depends on who you deal with. Most of the people I’ve encountered have been pleasant and professional and I’ve really had no reason to complain.

In My Opinion

Overall the Affinia Manhattan is a good hotel in an amazing location offering a good variety of accommodation, some of which is on the large side for New York. If you’re looking for somewhere to base yourself in the city for a few days and you’re not spending too much time in your room then I think it’s a great option.
