Airports and restaurants have never really been a great pairing, ask most travellers and airport restaurants conjure up images of overpriced plastic tasting food served in brightly lit canteen style spaces. Well not anymore. The last few years have seen airport food offerings change dramatically, read on to find out about some of the world’s best airport restaurants.
London Heathrow (T2)
The Gorgeous Kitchen – A collaboration of four young and talented female chefs producing good, healthy and simply gorgeous food. The intimate design, the exhibition cooking and innovative menu complement the impeccable and warm hospitality, all blending to create a one of a kind journey for travellers. London Heathrow (T2)
The Perfectionist’s Cafe – This is Heston Blumenthal’s first airport eatery where you can enjoy fantastic classic food served up fast. Celebrating some of Britain’s favourite dishes like the Full English and Fish & Chips. It will also feature pizzas from Heathrow’s first wood burning oven ice cream from the nitrogen ice cream parlour. Fantastic food…fast.
Barcelona El Prat Airport (T1)
Porta Gaig – This is Michelin starred chef Charles Gaig’s foray into airport restaurants. Serving modern Catalan cuisine enjoyed in peaceful, airy surroundings. Travellers can watch aircraft take off and land through the large plate glass windows while enjoying their food. For those in a hurry quick tapas are also available.
Munich Airport (T1)
Airbrau Brauhaus – This is Europe’s only airport restaurant to boast its own on site brewery, the beer is brewed in accordance with the Purity Decree of 1513 using local hops from the Hallertau region. Expect to be served roast duck, pig knuckle and cold cured meats.
Toronto Pearson International Airport (T1)
Asian Kitchen By Susur Lee – Top celebrity chef Susur Lee who you may have seen on Top Chef Canada or Iron Chef America is known for his twist on fine dining using fusion flavours and techniques. This bistro style restaurant shows off Lee’s French and Chinese influences.
Malaga Airport (T3)
Dani Garcia DeliBar – Spanish chef Dani Garcia offers modern tapas with classic Andalusian flavours. All served in a casual setting with tapas on display. If you haven’t got time to wait grab some tapas to go!
Los Angeles International (Tom Bradley International Terminal)
ink.sack – This is the second branch of the sandwich bar by chef Michael Voltaggio. Expect tiny crusty baguettes stuffed with fillings like cold fried chicken, Spanish cured meats or a Viet style banh mi with pork. Something a little different in the world of sandwiches!
Hong Kong International Airport (T2)
Hung’s Delicacies – This airport branch of the Michelin starred Hung’s Delicacies in North Point aims to promote genuine “Lou Seoi” specialties. Signature dishes include Chinese Marinated Goose Slices, Duck Tongues in Chinese Liquor and Chua Lam’s Mixed Noodles.
San Francisco International Airport (T2)
Cat Cora’s Kitchen – A sophisticated culinary experience that focuses on using fresh and organic ingredients to create innovative Californian cuisine. A raw bar serves oysters and there’s a great list of truly groundbreaking cocktails.
Stuttgart Airport (T1)
Top Air – This is Europe’s only Michelin starred airport restaurant from chef Marco Akuzun. Expect gourmet European food, complete with artistic flair and presentation. For those that have the time to spare before they travel there’s a seven course menu available.
